EnviroLab Asia is a 5C initiative that seeks to advance scholarship on environmental issues in Asia. In May 2017, the Henry Luce Foundation awarded EnviroLab Asia a $1.4 million grant to expand its activities at the Claremont Colleges. This year, EnviroLab Asia invites 5C faculty to apply for an opportunity to develop a new course or redevelop an existing course on environmental issues, themes, and ideas in East and Southeast Asia. Faculty will receive a $3,000 stipend to redevelop a course, and $6,000 to a develop a new course. The application is due Sept. 15, 2017 for courses to be taught in Spring 2018. Applicants need not have a background in Asian Studies. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, and strongly encourage applicants from the Sciences and/or non-Asian Studies backgrounds to apply.
Proposals will be evaluated based on the guiding principles of EnviroLab Asia, summarized below:
- Create a space for the production of new knowledge about the interaction between nature, the built environment, and human populations in Asia*
- Utilize cross-disciplinary approaches
- Encourage 5C exchanges between and across campuses, utilize the current resources at the Claremont Colleges, and/or encourage community-building between and among 5C campus communities
- Increase faculty and students’ capacities to effectively influence debates on environmental issues as well as present innovative solutions to challenges resulting from environmental problems
*Please note that the Henry Luce Foundation, which funds EnviroLab Asia, funds primarily work on East and Southeast Asia.
We plan to develop a community of students and scholars interested in this area of research by asking faculty awardees to: Â
- To meet other awardees to exchange information and share stories on how to teaching environmental issues in Asia and give an informal presentation on their course.
- Encourage your students to participate in EnviroLab Asia events and activities, such as the Workshop for Change, led by Thailand-based multidisciplinary theater artist Ruth Pongstaphone that will take place in February 2018, and a Joint Conference (organized with other Luce Foundation grantees) featuring student and faculty research presentations that will take place in April 2018.
We ask those who receive course development or redevelopment awards to provide a copy of the course syllabus, and participate in assessment activities related to the class (surveys, administering surveys with students, participation in discussions) that will be used to evaluate the program and create reports to the Foundation. Stipends will be released after the course has been taught for the first time.
